Money wasted: $575 million
An audit of the Chicago police released Oct. 3 found the department’s overtime mismanagement cost city taxpayers $575 million over six years. In that time, overtime costs skyrocketed from to $146 million in 2016, due to a manual timekeeping process that pays 61 timekeepers $7.2 million annually, yet still doesn’t ensure accurate records. The report found more than 6,700 illegitimate overtime entries.
