8 times when it’s smart to be a cheapskate

7. Greeting cards

When you buy someone a present, the purchase doesn’t feel complete unless you add a greeting card. The problem is, greeting cards can be expensive. According to the Greeting Card Association, Americans purchase approximately 6.5 billion greeting cards each year. The average price falls between $2 and $4 and high-end cards can cost as much as $10.

If you’re into crafts, make your own greeting cards. Or buy them at dollar stores. At Dollar Tree, for instance, advertised prices show two cards for $1. Remember: A 50-cent card says you care every bit as loudly as one that costs $10.

Alternatively, give a gift card. Wrap it in bright paper and ribbon and you won’t necessarily need a greeting card. Some have room for a greeting attached. And online gift cards often come with an animated greeting or space to write your own. Shop Gift Card Granny at MoneyTalksNews for gift card savings.
