PREPARE MENTALLY
If you have a diverse portfolio of investments and assets, then filing your taxes is probably a big undertaking. Mark the date (April 17th, since the 15th falls on a weekend) on your calendar, set a reminder in your phone, and get ready to organize. Make a list of everything you’ll need and, if necessary, note where you can find it. A spreadsheet would be a good way to track your organization.
HAVE A SPECIFIC SPACE IN YOUR HOME FOR ALL FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS
Whether you have a home office or just a desk in your bedroom, make sure you have one spot in your home where you store all financial information. W-2s, last year’s tax returns, receipts, and any other paperwork you will need to file your taxes.
